Uptown's Weiss Memorial Hospital has ceased accepting new patients, relocated existing patients, and canceled medical procedures due to a severe air conditioning malfunction. The issue, which arose from three out of four AC units failing during the transition from heating to cooling, caused indoor temperatures to spike to 90 degrees. This crisis occurred just as Chicago prepared for a major heatwave.

The hospital, owned by Dr. Manoj Prasad's Resilience Healthcare, was forced to move all 45 of its patients, with 22 transferred to West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, also owned by Prasad. West Suburban, which itself received a new AC system last year, expanded its bed capacity from 110 to match Weiss's 236 to accommodate the influx. The intensive care unit, patient floors, and medical offices at Weiss are all affected, despite attempts to use fans and portable AC units.

Repairs are estimated to take weeks, as the hospital awaits crucial parts and a boiler replacement. The immediate cost of repairs is approximately $250,000, but Prasad noted the additional financial toll from lost revenue, including patient fees and surgeries. Resilience Healthcare acquired Weiss and West Suburban for $92 million, with the hospitals reportedly losing up to $40 million annually prior to the acquisition. Prasad expects the hospital to be fully operational in about two weeks, though outpatient areas and the emergency room remain open for walk-ins, with critical patients being stabilized and transferred.

This incident at Weiss, along with similar AC problems at West Suburban and Provident Hospital, highlights a broader issue of aging infrastructure in healthcare facilities, particularly in the face of rising temperatures. Research from the UK indicates that nearly a fifth of hospitals canceled operations during a 2022 heatwave due to inadequate facilities, and a third of England's healthcare facilities are projected to be at risk from heatwaves by 2050. These events underscore the urgent need for hospitals to invest in robust climate resilience plans to safeguard surgical services and patient care.
