The friction intensified after Flávio publicly criticized Michelle as "authoritarian" when she opposed a planned alliance in Ceará between the Bolsonaro movement and Ciro Gomes for the state government. Michelle had advocated for Senator Eduardo Girão instead. Although Flávio later apologized, the incident deepened the rift. Michelle's relationship with Eduardo Bolsonaro also deteriorated after he openly disapproved of her as a potential presidential or vice-presidential candidate.
The current situation highlights Michelle's strategic position, as Flávio's campaign is struggling to attract female voters, with polls showing a significant lead for Lula. A BTG/Nexus survey from June 15, 2024, reportedly showed Lula with a 20 percentage point advantage over Flávio among women (49% to 29%). Michelle exerts considerable influence over the PL Mulher's women's groups nationwide and is seen as essential for energizing the female electorate. Her demand for a public apology from her stepsons underscores the power struggle within the family, with Flávio seemingly compelled to appease her to secure her support and avoid further erosion of his campaign.
Despite the internal tensions, Michelle and Flávio are expected to share a stage at a PL event in Fortaleza, Ceará, in July. This joint appearance, though for separate agendas, could be interpreted as a display of unity within the bolsonarista group and a potential step towards resolving their differences. Michelle will be there to support Priscila Costa's Senate pre-candidacy, while Flávio will back Alcides Fernandes. This event is significant because Ceará was a flashpoint for their earlier disagreement regarding an alliance with Ciro Gomes, which Michelle vehemently opposed.
