Micron Technology Inc.'s earnings report, scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, is poised to be one of the most significant in recent months, as investors are increasingly apprehensive about the long-term viability of the AI rally. The memory-chip manufacturer has seen its shares skyrocket by around 260% this year, driven by robust demand from data center developers.
This substantial gain has made Micron the largest individual contributor to the S&P 500's approximately 7% advance, with other memory and storage companies like SanDisk Corp., Western Digital Corp., and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc also dominating the leader board.
Kyle Taylor, a wealth advisor and portfolio manager at Tridelta Private Wealth, highlighted that memory has been a pivotal component of the AI infrastructure buildout in 2026. Spending on memory within the semiconductor market has exceeded 50% this year, a significant jump from about 22% a year ago. This surge in demand has supported the profits of Micron and its competitors, bolstering stock prices into the summer.
Analyst targets for Micron's stock are generally set between $1,200 and $1,500 by the end of the year, indicating extremely high expectations ahead of the earnings release. Investors will be particularly focused on the company's long-term contracts with customers. Micron's ability to meet the strong demand from hyperscalers building data centers has been a key factor in the performance of memory stocks, with supply challenges not expected to normalize until around 2028.
Micron's previous quarter showcased strong financials, with revenue reaching $23.86 billion, adjusted EPS at $12.20, and a non-GAAP gross margin of 74.4%. For the fiscal third quarter, management guided for $33.5 billion in revenue, $19.15 in adjusted EPS, and an 81% gross margin. The market will closely watch Q4 guidance, HBM4 and data-center demand, DRAM and NAND pricing, sold-out capacity, inventory levels, and customer commitments to gauge the continued strength of the memory cycle. A strong beat and positive guidance from Micron could reassure the market that the AI rally's fundamentals are sound, while cautious guidance could signal deeper issues.
