Three candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani secured victories in Democratic congressional primaries on Tuesday, signaling a strengthening position for the political coalition that propelled Mamdani to the mayoral office last year. This outcome suggests a potential shift in the Democratic Party's power dynamics, particularly in New York City.
The victories included significant upsets. Brad Lander, backed by Mamdani, defeated two-term incumbent Representative Dan Goldman in New York's 10th Congressional District. Similarly, Darializa Avila Chevalier, another Mamdani pick, unseated incumbent Representative Adriano Espaillat. In the open 7th Congressional District, Democratic Socialist Claire Valdez won despite the outgoing incumbent, Nydia Velázquez, endorsing a different candidate.
The success of Mamdani's endorsed candidates drew strong reactions, particularly from Republicans. Rep. Mike Lawler, a Republican from New York, alleged that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries made a deal with Mamdani to prevent New York City Council member Chi Ossé from challenging Jeffries, fearing a loss if Ossé had entered the race. Lawler publicly stated that "The Democrat party has officially become the party of Zohran, AOC, & Bernie."
