KNDS NV, the European tank manufacturer formed by the merger of Germany's Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and France's Nexter, is reportedly moving forward with plans for an initial public offering. The company has selected Bank of America Corp., Deutsche Bank AG, Goldman Sachs Group Inc., and Societe Generale SA to lead the IPO as global coordinators. The listing is being eyed for both Frankfurt and Paris, potentially as early as June or July. This timing is significant, as it would occur well in advance of the French presidential election in 2027.

The push for an IPO comes at a time of heightened investor interest in defense companies, driven by increased global defense spending. KNDS, headquartered in Amsterdam, generated $5 billion in revenue last year and employs over 11,000 people. The French government currently holds a substantial stake in the company, which could influence the IPO strategy.

The German government has recently expressed its intention to acquire a 40% stake in KNDS to match the French government's ownership, potentially paving the way for both governments to hold equal stakes. This agreement on governance and shareholding is seen as a crucial step before an IPO, as it demonstrates a unified Franco-German approach to a strategically important defense company. Sources indicate the company could be valued between $17.2 billion and $21.6 billion. The successful IPO would allow KNDS to capitalize on the current buoyant market for defense sector investments.
