The United States is actively pursuing a significant expansion of its nuclear power capabilities, fueled by the escalating electricity demands stemming from artificial intelligence data centers. Ho K. Nieh, chair of the US Nuclear Regulatory Committee (NRC), has confirmed that the NRC has undertaken "major steps" to reform its licensing framework for new nuclear plants and revise regulatory checks. Despite these reforms, Nieh emphasized the NRC's continued role as a "strong regulator." This push for increased nuclear energy projects is supported by the Trump administration, although specific details regarding the regulations under review were not disclosed.

This renewed interest in nuclear power marks a significant reversal from decades of decline. The sector was previously hampered by high-profile accidents, cost overruns, and a preference for natural gas and renewables. However, the current surge in electricity demand, coupled with energy security concerns and the limitations of intermittent renewable sources, has propelled nuclear power back into the global energy spotlight. The critical catalyst for this shift is the substantial and continuous power requirements of AI data centers, which are straining existing electricity grids.

Projections for U.S. data center electricity consumption have been dramatically revised upward, with estimates climbing from approximately 176 terawatt-hours to as much as 580 terawatt-hours by 2028. This substantial increase necessitates a reliable, constant, and carbon-free power source, which nuclear energy is uniquely positioned to provide. In response, major technology companies have begun signing direct agreements for nuclear capacity. Regulatory bodies are streamlining permitting processes for new reactors and fuel-cycle facilities, and developers are advancing both conventional large reactor designs and next-generation small modular and micro reactors to meet the anticipated demand.
