Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) has introduced its new sodium battery storage system called TENER. This system is designed for a longer service life and improved adaptability to extreme temperatures.
CATL expects to begin delivering the TENER system to China in September. By the end of this year, the company projects total shipments for the system to reach one gigawatt-hour (1 GWh). Global deliveries of the TENER system are scheduled to commence in June 2027.
This new product from CATL aims to address challenges in energy storage, such as reliance on lithium supply chains and performance in varying environmental conditions. The company's investment in sodium-ion technology includes a 10 billion yuan ($1.38 billion USD) investment in R&D and a 5 billion yuan ($739 million USD) commitment to build 40 GWh of production capacity.
