Syntilay, an AI and 3D-printed footwear company, has collaborated with NFL Hall of Famer Terrell Owens to release the world's first sport-specific custom recovery shoe for pickleball. The "TO Reset recovery shoe" is generated from a precise digital scan of each customer's foot, capturing unique geometry such as width, instep, asymmetry, and 3D shape. This advanced 3D printing technology then produces a shoe tailored to these individual dimensions, moving away from generic recovery footwear.
Terrell Owens, an avid pickleball enthusiast, played a direct role in the shoe's development. He provided critical insights into how pickleball athletes recover from the sport's high-impact movements and lateral motion. The shoe's structure was specifically engineered to alleviate pressure in areas where pickleball players experience the most fatigue and impact during and after play. This includes a reshaped heel portion to redistribute force and a roomier toe box for forefoot relaxation.
According to Syntilay founder and CEO Ben Weiss, the shoe helps reduce concentrated pressure on the heel by spreading force across other parts of the foot, creating a more balanced underfoot experience. Reebok co-founder and Syntilay advisor Joe Foster noted that this collaboration marks a significant advancement in recovery footwear, which has historically been generic. He stated that this sport-specific custom shoe represents the future direction of recovery footwear. The initiative aligns with a broader trend in footwear towards digital manufacturing and mass personalization, allowing for products to be created on demand and individually tailored rather than produced in standardized sizes.
