Conservation efforts over recent decades have led to a noticeable rebound in some shark populations, particularly in U.S. coastal waters. Scientists and experts, like Dr. Bob Hueter of OCEARCH, note that while sharks are not yet at their 1940s and 1950s levels, their numbers are growing after significant declines through the late 1980s due to overfishing and habitat destruction. This resurgence is viewed as a success story for ocean conservation, indicating a restoration of ecological balance, where healthy shark populations contribute to healthier ocean ecosystems.
However, this conservation success has led to an increase in human-shark encounters, particularly in "hot spots" like Long Island, New York, and coastal Australia. In the past month, Long Island reported six shark bites—none serious—the first since 2018. Marine scientists attribute this to cleaner water and rising numbers of sharks and their prey, such as menhaden. Michael Frisk, a professor at Stony Brook University, highlights that New York, despite being a major metropolitan area, now has a booming shark population thanks to conservation of both sharks and their food sources.
In response to these increased encounters, regions like Australia are investing millions of dollars in shark control technologies. These include drones, wearable deterrents, and sonar buoys with facial recognition. Similarly, Long Island is developing a warning system, expected by next summer, akin to Cape Cod's "Sharktivity" app, which uses sensor-equipped buoys and eyewitness reports. While human-shark interactions are rising, experts stress that serious shark attacks remain rare and are often cases of mistaken identity. Swimmers can reduce risk by avoiding dusk/dawn swimming, staying away from schools of fish, and not wearing shiny jewelry.
Despite the perceived increase in encounters, the actual frequency of shark bites has not necessarily risen, with 2022 tying 2020 for the fewest incidents in the past decade. Research, such as drone surveys over 26 Southern California beaches, revealed that people and sharks often swim peacefully within feet of each other. The increased visibility of incidents, amplified by smartphone use and social media, contributes to the perception of a rapid rise in shark activity. White shark populations, in particular, are benefiting from the recovery of seal and sea lion populations, their primary food source, following conservation acts like the 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act.
