Kirin Holdings, a Japanese brewing giant, is undergoing a significant transformation, moving away from being solely a beer company to a health and bio-oriented enterprise. This strategic shift is driven by a declining alcohol market in Japan due to factors like low birth rates, an aging population, and a growing "sober curious" culture among younger generations. Kirin anticipates a 3.2% decline in beer sales for the current year, while expecting non-alcoholic beer sales to surge by 38.5% and ready-to-drink (RTD) can cocktails to grow by 6%.

The company's long-term vision for 2035 centers on becoming a group that "creates the future with the health of the body and mind." Kirin is leveraging its deep expertise in fermentation, accumulated over a century of brewing, to develop health-focused products. This includes utilizing technologies for yeast culture, microbial control, temperature and oxygen management, and fermentation optimization, which are directly applicable to the health food industry. Specifically, Kirin has successfully integrated its beverage sector into a health science sector, driven by the rapid sales growth of its functional beverages containing "plasma lactic acid bacteria."

A key ingredient in their health push is Matured Hop Bitter Acids (MHBAs), derived from hops used in beer. Kirin has conducted extensive research, often in collaboration with institutions like Mitsui Fudosan, the University of Tokyo, and Juntendo University, demonstrating MHBAs' potential health benefits. Studies indicate that MHBAs can improve mood and energy levels, with participants reporting reduced anger, confusion, depression, tension, fatigue, and total mood disturbance, alongside increased friendliness and vigor. The ingredient has also shown antidepressant-like effects, aided in sleep and bone health, and even demonstrated promise in preventing Alzheimer's disease in a 2017 study. Kirin plans to incorporate MHBAs into functional products like supplements and non-alcoholic beers, recognizing their less bitter profile allows for integration into various foods and beverages without affecting flavor.
