This crisis is reinforcing the urgency for a global shift toward renewable energy and electrification, as governments and consumers seek more stable and affordable energy sources over volatile fossil fuels.
Historically, major disruptions in oil and gas markets, such as the Yom Kippur War and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, have driven lasting changes in the global energy mix. The current scale of disruption to oil and gas supplies is unprecedented, occurring just four years after the crisis caused by Russia's invasion, further accelerating the move away from fossil fuels and internal combustion engines towards renewables and electric devices. This shift is also influenced by the fact that over 90% of new renewable power projects in 2024 were cheaper than fossil fuel alternatives.
Across Asia and Europe, countries are responding by speeding up their clean energy transitions. The Philippines is accelerating utility-scale renewable plant development, and South Korea, Indonesia, and Vietnam have pledged significant shifts towards renewable energy and electrification. Vietnam, for instance, aims for 10% of households to have rooftop solar by the end of this year. While some Asian nations initially increased coal imports to address immediate energy shortages, the long-term trend favors renewables, with countries like Pakistan seeing substantial savings from their solar boom, offsetting billions in potential fossil fuel imports.
