Billionaire Len Blavatnik has executed a $4.3 billion recapitalization of DAZN, his sports entertainment company, in a strategic move to clear its debt and position it for future investment opportunities or a potential IPO. As DAZN's principal shareholder, Blavatnik's Access Industries Holdings LLC converted existing preference shares and retired loans, effectively infusing new equity into the company.
This significant financial restructuring aims to make DAZN more attractive to new investors by removing a substantial amount of debt from its balance sheet. Blavatnik has consistently supported DAZN, which has historically operated at a loss, reflecting his long-term commitment to the direct-to-consumer sports streaming model.
Access Industries has reportedly invested between $10 billion and $25 billion cumulatively in DAZN to acquire exclusive broadcasting rights for top-tier sports leagues globally, such as Italy's Serie A, Spain's La Liga in select markets, Germany's Bundesliga internationally, and Japan's J.League. This recapitalization follows a recent $587 million injection from Blavatnik into DAZN, highlighting his sustained financial backing for the platform's growth and expansion across over 200 territories.
