President Donald Trump's recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Iran has sparked considerable disapproval among his fellow Republicans. The 14-point agreement commits the US and Iran to an immediate and permanent end to military operations, including in Lebanon, and mandates Iran to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which had been closed since late February. In return, Washington pledged to develop a mutually agreed plan to provide $300 billion for Iran's reconstruction and development, while Iran agreed not to procure or develop nuclear weapons and maintain the current status quo of its nuclear program.
Several prominent Republicans have voiced strong objections. Senator Bill Cassidy, who recently lost a primary bid, labeled the MoU as "the worst foreign policy blunder in decades." Senator Thomas Massie criticized the $300 billion assistance plan, highlighting it as five times the annual US congressional spending on roads and bridges. Mike Pence, Trump's former Vice President, likened the deal to "appeasement" reminiscent of the Obama-Iran nuclear deal, from which Trump had withdrawn in 2018. Nikki Haley, Trump's former UN Ambassador, also expressed concerns that the deal would allow Iran to "win."
The deal implies a 60-day ceasefire, extendable by mutual consent, during which further negotiations on Iran's nuclear program are expected. Critics argue that the agreement provides substantial financial incentives to Iran without robust commitments on nuclear disarmament, human rights, the release of detained Americans, or ceasing support for proxy groups like Hezbollah. Comparisons are frequently drawn to former President Obama's 2015 agreement, with some Republicans suggesting Trump's deal is less comprehensive, while others like Senator Ted Cruz, despite defending it from such comparisons, expressed strong reservations about providing funds to Iran, stating, "we should not fund the rebuild." The agreement also states that the US will not impose new sanctions or deploy additional forces in the region during this period.
