The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is escalating its efforts to combat the New World screwworm, a parasitic flesh-eating fly that threatens livestock and has reappeared in the U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced new approaches, including the potential deployment of AI-controlled drones in partnership with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for wildlife monitoring. The USDA also launched the "Grand Challenge" grant program in January, allocating $105 million to fund 40 research projects aimed at developing innovative solutions, such as enhancing sterile fly production, creating novel traps, and researching new treatments.
These funded projects explore diverse strategies beyond traditional methods. Solutions include developing male flies with hyper-active sex drives, improving lure and trap methods, using minimum-risk insecticides, detecting wounds with artificial intelligence, utilizing insect-killing fungi, and deploying dogs to locate screwworms. Scientists consider the release of sterile male flies to mate with females and produce unviable eggs the most effective eradication method. However, current U.S. and Mexican facilities can only produce about 100 million sterile flies weekly, far short of the estimated 600 million needed to effectively combat the outbreak.
The recent resurgence has seen 12 active U.S. cases as of June 17, with the latest detection confirmed on June 1 in a sheep in Sutton County, Texas. Mexico's SENASICA has reported 1,921 active cases, with 50 within 100 miles of the U.S. border. This outbreak has prompted 12 U.S. states, including Texas, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and New York, to implement quarantines, movement restrictions, and import requirements for warm-blooded animals. The USDA is fast-tracking screwworm treatments for animals, building a stockpile in Texas, and surging personnel to affected areas, with over 100 staff dedicated to the issue.
In addition to the USDA's domestic efforts, international bodies like the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are also increasing their fight against screwworm, which has caused over 20,000 reported outbreaks across Latin America and the Caribbean. The IAEA is strengthening regional cooperation, training scientists to detect infestations, and helping countries expand sterile insect production facilities. Specialists emphasize that transboundary threats necessitate collective international responses and sustained scientific collaboration, as highlighted by experts from the University of Florida.
