Elon Musk is in direct talks with ASML's CEO Christophe Fouquet regarding his ambitious TeraFab project, a multi-phase, vertically integrated semiconductor manufacturing facility in Texas. The proposed facility is expected to have an initial investment of $55 billion and a potential total investment of up to $119 billion. ASML's CEO confirmed speaking directly with Musk, noting that Musk is "very serious about all those projects," referring to his semiconductor and satellite ambitions.
Musk's TeraFab initiative aims to support semiconductor production tied to AI and autonomous systems for companies like Tesla, xAI, and SpaceX. However, Fouquet warned that the strong demand for AI chips means the market will be supply-limited for a considerable time, and projects like TeraFab could further strain the already tight global chip industry. Despite increasing production, forecasting long-term chip demand remains challenging as AI infrastructure spending accelerates worldwide.
ASML, the sole provider of crucial extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines necessary for manufacturing leading-edge chips, will be a likely supplier for TeraFab. Major chipmakers such as Nvidia, TSMC, Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron Technology, and Intel all rely on ASML's systems. Fouquet anticipates that the first logic chips produced using ASML's next-generation High-NA EUV systems will arrive within months, with Intel expected to be among the earliest adopters.
